๐ฌ๐ง GATSBY’S ROOM AT THE BEAUMONT HOTEL
Location: 8 Balderton St, Brown Hart Gardens, London W1K 6TF
Located in the posh Mayfair district of London, The Beaumont Hotel is a luxury 5-star hotel boasting Art Deco design and 1920s glamour.
The hotel serves a vegan version of the British tradition of afternoon tea in the aptly named Gatsby’s Room. The room’s vibe is both elegant and intimateโwith paneled walls, romantic lighting, bookcases, and live piano music. There’s even a secret bookcase passageway hidden away in the room!
Price: Starting at ยฃ48 per person.
The standard tea offering is ยฃ48. But to make your afternoon tea even more special, you can add a touch of bubbles with vegan-friendly Gusborne English sparkling wine. A glass of 2017 Gusbourne Blanc de Blancs will bring the price of afternoon tea to ยฃ63, while 2018 Gusbourne Rosรฉ will price your tea at ยฃ65. We each opted for the rosรฉ to start our meal, which was crisp and refreshing.
If alcohol isn’t your thing, there is also a non-alcoholic offer in the form of JING Jasmine Pearls Sparkling Tea, for an additional ยฃ5 tacked on to your price tag. Apparently, this is one of the best sparkling teas on the market at the moment.
๐ซ WHAT IS AFTERNOON TEA?
So what is afternoon tea anyhow? Afternoon tea is a British culinary tradition of a sit-down break around 4:00 p.m. with accompaniments of tea, sandwiches, scones, and cake. The purpose of the tradition is to fill the hunger gap between lunch and dinner.
But in keeping with the Gatsby’s Room theme, The Beaumont’s thoughtfully crafted afternoon tea menu is sprinkled with a light American accentโso to speakโwith U.S.-inspired touches in the savory and sweet courses.
๐ดFOOD AND DRINKS
Finger Sandwiches:
- Pulled Jackfruit with Red Cabbage and Apple Slaw
- Cobb Salad
- King Oyster Cocktail
- Deviled Tofu Mayonnaise
After our bubbles, we enjoyed individual plates of finger sandwiches presented as a quartet. Our favorite was the pulled jackfruit sandwich, which was wonderfully smokey with a mild kick. The slaw added a refreshing crunch. The cobb sandwich was your quintessential cucumber tea sandwich. The king oyster cocktail was meaty and earthy, while the deviled tofu was creamy and mildly eggy. We could not resist a second helping of sandwiches when offered!
Teas
The Beaumont serves JING teas, a selection of authentic leaf tea. You can choose from black, green white, or oolong teas. We had the Organic Darjeeling 2nd Flushโwhich was rich and fragrant, and the Red Dragonโwhich was tart and fruity.
Scones & Pastries:
- Freshly Baked Raisin and Plain Scones
- Alabama Lane Cake
- Mississippi Mud Pie
- Wild Blueberry Religieuse
- Caramelized Apple Pie
The scones and pastries were served on a beautiful, two-tier frosted glass tea tower. The scones, our favorite of the bunch, came wrapped in napkins, still warm from the oven. Of course, we slathered the accompanying coconut-based Cornish clotted cream and strawberry preserves on those marvelously moist delights.
Our second favorite was the “apple pie”, which really should be in quotation marks; it was cleverly presented in macaron form, with caramelized apple sandwiched between two airy vanilla-flavored meringue shells. We really liked the other sweet treats, but to be honest, we were too full to finish them all! But rest assured if you have a raging sweet tooth, because the waitstaff is more than happy to refresh your dessert trays.
Afternoon tea in Gatsby’s Room was truly one of the highlights of our quick jaunt across the pond. With exceptional service and delicious vegan offerings, The Beaumont Hotel’s 5-star tea experience is unmissable when you’re in London! We highly recommend reserving a table in advance.
