Hit your grill with a dose of Jamaican flavor with our Vegan Jerk Burger! These flavor bombs come together in just 15 minutes.
It’s grilling season, and our tastebuds are craving island flavors. We created this Jamaican-inspired burger that is a spicy, sweet explosion of flavor. We slathered vegan burger patties with jerk seasoning and grilled them up with pineapple rings. The pineapple rings become smokey and caramelized, which perfectly complements the fiery spice of the jerk seasoning. Lettuce and sliced red onion add crisp texture and freshness, while tomato adds juiciness.
🇯🇲 WHAT IS JERK?
Jerk traditionally refers to a complexly marinated meat that’s cooked low-and-slow over a fire or grill. Jerk seasoning comes in the form of a dry rub or wet marinade, and its primary ingredients include allspice and Scotch bonnet peppers. Jerk is probably a marriage of West African seasoning methods with Taíno cooking techniques. After the Spanish got the heave-ho from Jamaica by the British, they emancipated their African slaves. These newly freed slaves fled to the mountains to escape re-enslavement by the British. They became known as the Maroons, and their commingling with the remaining Tainos led to the absolute fire that is Jamaican jerk.
📝 INGREDIENTS
- Vegan burger patties: we used Dr. Praeger’s Perfect Burger patties, but any vegan burger patties (such as Impossible or Beyond) will do.
- Jerk seasoning: you can’t make jerk burgers without jerk seasoning. We use a wet seasoning. Our favorite brands are Grace’s and Walkerswood. We are able to find these brands at our local grocery stores, such as Kroger or HEB. But otherwise, you can find them in a Caribbean grocery store or online.
- Neutral oil: to thin out and make the jerk seasoning more spreadable. It also helps the burger patties achieve a nice char without burning.
- Pineapple rings: the smokey sweetness of the grilled pineapple perfectly complements the spiciness of the jerk seasoning.
- Hamburger buns: to house all of our burger goodness.
- Red onion and lettuce: add crunchy texture and freshness.
- Tomato: adds juiciness.
🔪 STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
- Make the jerk marinade: Whisk together the jerk seasoning with oil.
- Marinade the burger patties: Brush the burger patties on both sides with the jerk marinade.
- Time to grill: Grill the burger patties and pineapple rings. You can also toast up your burger buns over the grill while you’re at it.
- Assemble the burgers: Place the burger patties and pineapple rings between the buns, piling them high with lettuce, red onion, and tomato. Enjoy!
